4-Month Survivor Contest
Membership Chairman – Howard Karashoff
President – Scot McCormick

Enthusiasm and commitment are at the heart of any membership drive. LeTip of Willow Grove, PA demonstrated high marks for both during this intense 4-month spurt that brought their chapter to a new level of success.

In August 2008, LeTip of Willow Grove decided to expand their chapter from 24 members to a new target of 34 by year’s end. Howard Karashoff, the chapter’s talented and energetic Membership Chair, spearheaded the contest. Best of all, not only did Willow Grove reach their goal, but they exceeded it by 2!

Here is an outline of Willow Grove’s contest and their subsequent results.

Karashoff divided the chapter into 4 teams and assigned a Captain to each team. The captains were chosen on the strength of their recruiting skills and were in charge of motivating their teams to bring guests.

The team with the most points won the contest and points were awarded in the following manner:

5 points per guest
10 points per guest turned into a member
10 points per guest in targeted category
20 points per guest in targeted category turned into a member

Each member of the winning team was awarded a 2GB Nano iPod.
$100 to each team captain who upgraded a team's badge color during the contest.

Karashoff, a photographer and graphic designer, made a Survival Tally Board, which was displayed behind the Board of Directors table. Miniature iPod replicas were moved up the board to show each team’s totals.

"The competition was intense. The contest and prizes added excitement and energy to our meetings," said Karashoff. "We had a great time while growing our group and our chapter spirit," he continued.

John DiMarzio, Past President and LeTip Chapter Ambassador said, "Karashoff continually added to the excitement each week when he would announce a new way to earn bonus points for the following week. We never knew what he would come up with until he made the announcement and then the teams would rev up big time for the next week's challenge.

Each week Karashoff kicked it up another notch by naming a new target category, which was signified by an empty chair. Extra points were granted to the team that brought in a guest representing that week’s target, such as a painter, printer. "Some weeks," said Scott McCormick, Chapter President, "a bonus roll of the dice was awarded to the team that brought in the most guests. They could earn 2 or 3 or 10 times the roll of the dice - and the point board would change by leaps and bounds. The teams would go wild!"

"We cheered, booed, hooted and yelped for 3 ½ months. It was always exciting and look what happened," said DiMarzio:

Willow Grove had 57 guests from mid August to mid December, the contest’s ending date.
Of those 57 guests, they signed on 12 new members.
They also had 6 badge color changes during the contest period.
